I am frequently impressed by the quality of writing in a book from an unknown author (or an author without a large publishing company behind them).

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful novel with heart and soul, April 23, 2014

Courage times three is a unique read. There is so much history and tragedy- it is written almost as a memoir. You hear stories and you see shows on television about Nazi’s but nothing prepares you for the full horror of what it was like. Brenda Brown Elliott does it beautifully with heart and soul- and not relying on gimmicky clichés.
The authors voice is so true you could believe that she experienced this events first hand.
Lilly, Madeline and Lorraine are paragons of faith. No matter what life threw at them, they handled it with faith. Battling two world wars and emigrating to America- these women never lost hope.
There is so much more in this book, like Lilly and Valentin’s tender love story that defies all the odds. You just have to read it to believe it. Some label this book as Christian fiction, but I don’t agree. This is a book about love hope and faith and it is for everyone; it shouldn’t be pigeon holed into one genre.
Overcoming is a big theme in the novel and how families cope with adversity and triumph.
For me, on a personal note: This book is an allegory. An allegory on how to succeed at life by having faith. Brenda Brown Elliott and her strong role model characters showed me what every woman should aspire to- true grace.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Promising Christian Fiction Author, March 28, 2014

This review is from: Courage Times Three. A Novel (Kindle Edition)
The historical tidbits and characters are the treasures hidden between the pages. Choosing three very different women to demonstrate how they made it through the trial of wartime living with only their faith in God and the love of a family provided a varied look on how the war affected everyone at that time. This is a Christian fiction novel. If you aren’t a fan of Christian fiction do not expect to like it.

The actual construction of the novel tended to be a bit textbook-like with more telling than showing. This is a common problem for those who did so much research and believe it would be a shame to leave any out. All the same, Ms. Elliot shows signs of being a very promising writer. I look forward to her next book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Novel based around love, family and God., March 20, 2014
This review is from: Courage Times Three. A Novel (Kindle Edition)
Courage Time Three. By Brenda Brown Elliott

This is a fiction novel based around love, family and God. This is a story about three women whom have been through some difficult life altering situations. The time line starts in the 1900’s ending in the today’s times, it is a lot of information to take it. I rather got bored in some parts of the book because it seemed to be a history lesson instead of being about the character itself. It does have some good points such as, the love and family bond that they all share. This book brought tears to my eyes when describing the life threatening situations each of the women went through along with their extended family. Through out all these women and their families give thanks to God for everything.

This novel begins with Madeline, whom was born to a very poor peasant family in Southwest Germany the 1900’s. She lost her parents at the age of ten, she is severely malnourished and barely survives. She is thankful to God she is sent to her rich Aunt and Uncle in France, where she has the best that life can offer. She married and had a daughter, she knew she was blessed. Until the second world war started, it changed her life forever… would she ever find happiness again?

Lilly, Madeline’s very much loved daughter, born into wealth in northern France in 1925. At 14 years old she was sent underground for avoid capture and possible death by the Nazis during WWII. Lilly spent three years near death in hiding, till she was provided a way out. Lilly remained underground two more years in another location. She found her true love Valentin and a job to keep her alive till the end of the war. They share the love of God and their future is full of surprises.

Lastly is Lorraine, Lilly s sister in law. Lorraine was born into a poor family in 1920. Her parents were killed by the German Gestapo in the 1939. She and her two younger sisters were place into life threatening situations. Lorraine whom is thirteen took on the role of the mother to an eight and nine year old. They were placed on a railroad train car heading to the Baltic Sea by a neighbor trying to save them from a likely death. The situations these girls were heartbreaking to say the least. Still they prayed for the day they would be safe. They were sent to a monastery, without any information about whom they were and their parents they were sent to an orphanage till they could leave. As adults they were separated again but will reunite.

favorite passages:

“Years of suffering, throughout the work would pass before final defeat.”
“Regardless of how many times he questioned himself, the fact remained. He couldn’t change the past. He absolutely must look head to the future.”
“Regardless of their social status, they both been raised with much love. They understood the true meaning of family.”
“As long as she had a breath in her body, she would do all she possibly could to remain alive.”
“Should the day arrive when they would once again be fee, she would immediately seek them out. Tears were shed upon their separation.”
“Never in her short life has a few simple words been more gripping.”
“Humanitarian acts of selfless love, caring and sharing, shone through abundantly.”
“He would protect her, provide her with a good living and a warm home. He would be an upstanding father to the children they would one day have, raising them in Gods word.”
“We will not forget that liberty made her home. Nor shall her chosen alter be neglected.”
“There she stood. The land of the free and home of the brave.”
“Grandpa? Are those d*** (some might find the author’s word choice offending.) birds at it again? Before Hal had a chance to think, he burst into laughter hearing the innocently spoken words roll so easily off the tongue of their precious little one.”
“A twelve gun salute, each representing one of the twelve crew members, marked the end of the moving memorial.”
“Together, they would become one of the closest knit families anyone could hope to be blessed with.”
“Still they knew, with every sense in their being, her spirit was a mere breath away. Perhaps she had a hand on leading them to each other.”
” I loved you so much then, I didn’t think any man could love a woman than i loved you. And here we are, fifty-six years later, still in love. Only now, my love is tenfold.”

5.0 out of 5 stars A Heartfelt Story of War Tragedy, Transformation and the Courage to Embrace Opportunity, February 28, 2014

Courage Times Three. A Novel is a well written historical Christian based story involving 3 inspiring young women, their growth and challenges faced through dark times of war but also how this enables them to transform stronger.
The author has a smooth and calming writing style that enables you to actually “feel” her words. Powerful and inviting.
Faith connects these women, reminding the reader that turning to God in times good or bad manifests strength to help carry you through anything.
I do not hold Christian beliefs of a God. Even though I was raised United. However I do believe in the power of positive spiritual energy and I felt that in this book.
Touching, enlightening, loving, challenging, devastating, encouraging…are all thoughts that ran though my mind reading this tale full of inspiring life lessons.
Madeline, Lorraine and Lilly in particular, are developed such that an understanding emotional and likeable deep connection is established before you’re consciously aware. The sign to me of a very talented writer that’s passionate about her words.
Just really enjoyed the flow of this adventure beginning to end. The life lessons learned and subtle reminders throughout of just how thankful we should be.
My recommendation is to set some time aside to read this book. A book that will touch you in so many different ways.
